The Central Murray Regional Waste Management Group is leading by example in 2007, through its commitment to the Waste Wise program and reducing its regional environmental impact.
The Group business is the only Gold Waste Wise Certified Regional Waste Management Group in Victoria and has extended its broadened its commitment to waste and recycling to also look at energy and water consumption. The organisation has committed to reducing its Ecological Footprint and as part of its program has purchased a Toyota Prius Hybrid and also offset its office based and fuel generated carbon emissions.

History
The Central Murray Regional Waste Management Group (CMRWMG) was formed in November 1997.
It comprises the Victorian municipalities of Buloke Shire Council, Gannawarra Shire Council, Loddon Shire Council, Swan Hill Rural City Council and the Shire of Wakool in New South Wales.
One of 16 waste management regions within Victoria, the CMRWMG is a statutory body established under the Environment Protection Act 1970.
The role of the Group is to work with local government, the private sector, the community and the EPA to achieve sustained reductions in waste and improvements in the management of residual waste streams.
The main objective of the CMRWMG is to facilitate and foster best management practices in waste management.
It aims to meeting this objective by:
Providing a waste management plan for the region, implementing and promoting this,
Setting performance targets for municipal waste reduction programs,
Developing, implementing, supporting and promoting waste reduction and recycling programs,
Introducing measures that lead to conformity of standards of waste reduction, waste management and litter prevention,
Investigating and advising on landfill disposal costs and charges within the region,
Encouraging the training of staff involved in waste management,
Promoting and undertaking research in waste management reduction and recycling,
Providing advice regarding best practice in waste management and promotion of improved waste management technology, and
Promotion and coordination of community and industry education within the region.

- Appointment of a Regional Education Officer and launch of Waste Wise Program
- Formation and adoption of a Regional Waste and Litter Education Plan
- Pinegro Compost trial in Gannawarra
- Monthly Regional Updates
- Adoption of Group's logo
- Establishment of Central Murray Regional Education Steering Committee
- Implementation of the Waste Wise Schools Program
- Regional agreement with drumMUSTER farm chemical container collection program
- Successful application of Infrastructure Grants
- Development and adoption of Three Year Business Plan and an annual Action Plan
- Preparation and development of the Regional Education Plan
- Arranged regional scrap metal collection and ongoing collection service.
- Communication Plan adopted
- Developed basic Regional Service Standards for Member Councils
- Member Councils closed 21 landfills throughout the region as part of the landfill rationalisation program adopted in the Regional Waste Management Plan.
- Commingled recycled system introduced in Swan Hill Rural City Council
- Held drumMUSTER and Gatekeepers Training Courses across the region
- Staffing and charging at landfills and transfer stations implemented throughout the region
- Promotion of Regional Home Composting Campaign
- Regional Newsletter
- New kerbside waste and recycling collection service implemented in all member Councils
- Investigation into the processing of Green Organics
- Adoption of a Schedule of Roles and Responsibilities of the Regional Waste Management Group and Member Councils
- Commissioned "Volumes of Agricultural Waste in the Central Murray Region" Report undertaken by Agriculture Victoria
- Involved in statewide review of Regional Waste Management Groups and the EPA draft Landfill Assurance Guidelines
- Regional agreement with drumMUSTER for chemical container collection program (over 550,000 drums collected)
- Loddon Shire Council, Buloke Shire Council, Gannawarra Shire Council Wakool Shire Council and Swan Hill Rural City Council and CMRWMG achieved status as Waste Wise organisations.
- Expansion of the plastic range at the Wycheproof Materials Resource Recovery Facility.
- Expansion of the plastic range at the VISY Materials Resource Recovery Facility in Swan Hill to include 1-7
- Roll out of the Remember To Recycle Right Campaign to reduce contamination levels
- Membership of EcoBuy (Buloke Shire Council, Loddon Shire Council, Gannawarra Shire and Swan Hill Rural City Council)
- E-waste recycling program at 14 sites
- Introduction of Recycle Annie as region's Recycling Mascot
