Based on the waste minimisation hierarchy of reduce, reuse and recycle, the Waste Wise program is a statewide community education program developed by Sustainability Victoria.
The CMRWMG employs a full-time Regional Education Officer to implement the Waste Wise program within the Central Murray region.
The program encourages RWMGs, Councils and Waste Contractors to develop their own waste minimisation strategy to reduce the cost of waste and litter management, foster the development of a Waste Wise ethic within the community, reduce wasteful use of resources, reduce the amount of material going to landfill, and reduce the amount of litter produced.
The Central Murray Waste Wise program commenced in February 1999 for an initial three year period, and is now funded as a permanent full-time position under the Environment Protection Act.
The CMRWMG works in the following areas:
- Schools
- Businesses (small and large)
- Government agencies (local government, healthcare, tertiary)
- Public Place Recycling (including venues and events)
- Litter prevention
- Communications
- Residents (includes plastic bag free campaigns)
- Home composting
