Plastic Shopping Bag Free Campaigns
Much of the activity undertaken as part of the Community Information and Local Government programs is targeted at the residential sector, however each year the Central Murray RWMG aims to undertake a regional campaign based on a particular issue identified by the Group, the Member Councils or the community.
Congratulations Murrabit and Quambatook! Plastic Bag Free for 3 years
Traders in Murrabit and Quambatook recieved their certificates acknowlegding their commitment to the campaign on the 4th of December by Crs Neil Gannon and Oscar Aertssen from Gannawarra Shire.
Congratulations Sea Lake! Plastic Bag Free for 3 years
Sea Lake traders have joined the communities of Cohuna-Leitchville and Loddon Shire for their commitment to the Plastic Bag Free Challenge.
Traders were presented with their certificates on the 25th of September by Buloke Shire Mayor Reid Mather and Deputy Major Leo Tellefson.
Cohuna-Leitchville & Loddon Shire Plastic Bag Free since 2004 and 2005. Both communities are still operating as plastic bag free and have made a significant contribution to their local environments by saying no to plastic bags!
After the success of the Cohuna Leitchville project, Loddon Shire decided to follow up with a campaign to become Australia's first Plastic Bag Free Shire. On December 9th 2005, the Council was presented with a framed certificate commending their achievements from the Minister for Environment John Thwaits. Loddon Shire have since gone on to win two awards for the plastic bag free project, including a Tidy Towns Award and a Plastic Bag Reduction Award from Keep Australia Beautiful. In December 2007, they have been recognised for their milestone 2 year plastic bag free status.
In February 2005, the townships of Cohuna-Leitchville became the regions first Plastic Bag Free towns. With over 60 traders signing onto the campaign, over 1 million plastic bags have been eliminated from the towns. In April 2007, the traders of Cohuna and Leitchville were recognised for their fantastic efforts in achieving two years as plastic bag free towns. They have collectively eliminated over 2.5 million plastic bags. What an achievement!!
In July 2006, the CMRWMG received funding for 5 towns in the Buloke Shire and 2 in Gannawarra Shire to participate in the Plastic Bag Free 'Just Say No' Campaign, funded through Sustainability Victoria. Towns including, Sea Lake, Wycheproof, Birchip, Donald, Nullawil, Culgoa and Watchem signed on to undertake the campaign in the Buloke Shire. Quambatook, Murrabit and Lake Charm launched their campaigns to become plastic bag free in October 2006 in Gannawarra Shire.
Nine towns in Swan Hill Rural City Council also signed on to participate in the campaign.
Plastic Bag reduction events have been held in Charlton and Barham to encourage people to say not to plastic bags and shop with reusable bags.
